The Pamphleteer essay competition
In their fight to end racial prejudice in the United States, African Americans were faced with several obstacles. These obstacles or discriminatory laws against African Americans fell into 4 categories:
1. Racial Segregation which was characterized by separation of different races in daily life when both are doing equal tasks, such as eating in a restaurant, drinking from a water fountain, using a rest room, attending school, going to the movies, or in the rental or purchase of a home.
2. Voter’s suppression and disfranchisement, which was the revocation of, or failure to grant, the right to vote to a person or group of people. Disfranchisement may occur explicitly through law, or implicitly through means such as intimidation.
3. Denial of economic opportunities or resources nationwide
4. Private actions of violence and mass racial violence aimed at African Americans, which were often encouraged and seldom hindered by government authorities.
The Civil Rights Movement confronted discrimination against African Americans with a variety of strategies such as litigations and lobbies and were generally nonviolent.
However in 1963 Americans and indeed the whole world woke up to reality by a speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. Kings speech “I have a Dream” electrified the crowd and brought passion and eloquence to the cause and a perception that a prejudice free America can have new meaning for the whole world.
Kings words crystallizes the ideas firing in the minds of the More than 200,000 demonstrators gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial, where he delivered his famous speech and commanded the attention of people everywhere.
